College students from the Greek community staged a rally at the University of South Wales in demonstration over a decision by university deans and rectors to close the university's Department of Modern Greek Studies.

The rally was participated by students of Greek student associations that are based in the greater Sydney area (University of New South Wales, Sydney, Macquarie, UTS) as well as delegations from the National Union of Greek-Australian Students (NUGAS) and youth committees of the Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) and the Greek Orthodox community of New South Wales.

The community's youth association met with the university's officials who did not seem willing to change their decision for the Greek department's closure. The students groups noted that they would continue their mobilizations in order for the decision not to be implemented while thousands of signatures have also been collected for this cause.

At the same time, in a brighter note, the newspaper "The Age" refers to the resumption of the Modern Greek Studies program at Monash University in the State of Victoria with an article under the headline "Epitelous". Courses will start next year and the program will have the Greek government's financial support.  The program was interrupted in 1999 and was decided to start again considering that 47 pct of the Greek-Australian population lives in the State of Victoria. For the time being, the university offers Greek language courses only for beginners Modern Greek language courses are also offered at La Trobe University.
