The Pan-Pontian Federation of America in cooperation with the Pontic associations and the Federation of Hellenic Societies of NY organized a lecture a the Stathakeio Cultural Center in Astoria. Key note speaker at the event was the author of the book "Not even my name", Thea Halo, in which she spoke about the tragedy endured by Pontic Greeks in Asia Minor through the personal struggles of her centenarian mother, Sani Halo.
The event is included in the framework of the Anniversary of the Pontic Genocide. Today, May 19th, a flag raising ceremony of Pontos and Greece will take place during a special ceremony to be held at Bowling Green in NY.
The event for Thea Halo was opened by the General Secreatary of the fedration, Dimitris Moshidis. During his presentation of speaker and author, Thea Halo, he noted that Halo had significantly helped in the cause for the recognition of the Pontic genocide last year by the related academic alliance with her book as well as her speeches, lectures, international conference presentations and academic forums.
In the meantime, Sano Halo, the grandmother of Pontos, celebrated her 100th birthday last Saturday in a special event hosted in her honor by the Pan-Pontian Federation and the Holy Foundation of the Pontians in America "Panagia Soumela" in West Milford.
The newspaper "National Herald" (Ethnikos Kirikas) wrote that her birthday present came a few days before when it was announced that she and her daughter Thea had received the Greek nationality following efforts made by prominent Pontians and with the help of Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis.
