Hellenic Council’s contacts with Australian politicians

Omogeneia officials, members of the Hellenic Council, will meet with the political leadership of Australia on Sunday and Monday in Canberra. The Council's annual congress takes place on Sunday and will examine the issues to be examined with the Australian politicians. Among the topics to be tabled with be the promotion of Greek language learning and the multicultural policies of Australia's current leadership. A high point of the meeting will be the necessity to instruct the Greek language in all levels of the Australian education system. Also to be discussed will be the Cyprus dispute, the FYROM name issue, recognition of the Pontian Genocide, the reopening of the Theological School of Halki etc...

 

The Council's annual "Niki" award recipient this year will be Michael Atkinson, the South Australian Attorney-General, Minister for Justice, Minister for Veterans' Affairs, who played a starring role in the recognition of the Pontian Genocide in his state's parliament.

 

Also on the agenda will be an effort to secure meetings with Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, foreign minister, Steven Smith and main opposition leader, Malcolm Turnbull.
