35 year Nikos Aslamazides, one of the three workers who for 19 days was on a hunger strike at the French shipyards passed away suddenly after returning to Xanthi, northern Greece.
Aslamazides was one of the three Thracian sand-blasters who had been striking at the Saint Nazaire shipyards, who had made front-page headlines last month in the French press, after going on a hunger strike demanding back pay from the areas shipyards. Following marathon negotiations, the workers who demanded 8 thousand euros in back pay and an airline ticket to return to Greece were only granted the second request, acknowledging only the sum of 2,600 euros as back pay. The workers were on strike for 19 days drinking only water and salt. Following intense social pressure, the Norwegian shipping company finally met the demands for back wages and the workers eventually returned to Greece when physicians stated it was safe for them to do so. The official cause of Aslamazides death remains unknown pending the report of the medical examiner however it is estimated he may have suffered a strike while the possible use of addicting drugs may have contributed to his already battered health.
