Currently visiting New York, Justice Minister Sotiris Hatzigakis recently visited the Rikers Island Correctional Facility.
Hatzigakis had the opportunity to be briefed and to study the positive
elections of the American prison system, as well as contemporary prison
policies being implemented there, particularly in relation to medical
care for inmates as well as their social and professional
rehabilitation. The Greek minister noted the ministry’s main priorities for the near future, including reduction of prison congestion, with the building of new facilities, improvement of health care for inmates, and their smoother re-assimilation into society on their release, with special educational and career training programs.
