The candidacy of 33-year-old Alexis Giannoulias for the position of federal senator for Illinois – held until last November by US President Barack Obama – has enthused the Greek-American community. Last week, Giannoulias visited New York for appearances at events to financially aid his pre-election campaign.
A report in the “urkish Daily News” indicates that Turkish Education Minister Huseyin Celik has promised Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew that he will establish a special commission to study the possibility of reopening the Halki Theological School which was closed in 1971.
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew is due to arrive in New Orleans on October 20 to begin a visit to the United States, the purpose of which is to convene and preside over the 8th Religion, Science and the Environment (RSE) Symposium, and to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the enthronement of Archbishop Demetrios of America as the Primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.

Ο πρόεδρος του ΠΑΣΟΚ είπε ότι ο δρόμος δε θα είναι εύκολος και δεσμεύτηκε να καταβάλει κάθε προσπάθεια, με ειλικρίνεια και σκληρή δουλειά. «Δε ζητώ την ανοχή, ζητώ τη συμμετοχή» είπε ο κ. Παπανδρέου, μιλώντας για τις τεράστιες δυνατότητες της ελληνικής κοινωνίας που «πνίγονται από τη διαφθορά, την ανομία και τη σπατάλη».
«Δεσμεύομαι να αγωνιστώ για να πιστέψουν ξανά οι Έλληνες στις δυνάμεις τους και να καταλάβουν ότι χωρίς διαχωρισμούς και προκαταλήψεις μπορούμε να πετύχουμε πολλά. Δεν υπάρχει ούτε μια μέρα για χάσιμο», είπε ο μεγάλος νικητής των εκλογών, καλώντας σε συστράτευση τις προοδευτικές δυνάμεις του τόπου, για μια δίκαιη κοινωνία που όπως είπε θα μας κάνει όλους υπερήφανους.
