It is hoped that flights from Melbourne to Greece will soon be a reality, as planned by the Australian airline company, Jetstar, a subsidiary of Qantas. “Athens is in our future planning, because large Greek community lives in Melbourne,” said the company’s general manager, Alan Joyce, at a press conference in Singapore, where new flights were inaugurated. “Our next target – in about 2010 – will be Athens, Rome and other cities of southern Europe,” he said. Direct flights from Melbourne to Athens stopped when Olympic Airlines terminated its flights “for financial reasons.” Mr. Joyce expressed the view that it will be a profitable route, “although the fares will be low”.
