5th SAE Meeting

The 5th Council for Hellenes Abroad meeting concluded in Thessaloniki which was attended the SAE Youth Network Coordinators, GSGA General Director Ioannis Kyparissidis and members of the secretariat, the Director of the Cyprus foreign ministry Division of Overseas and Repatriated Cypriots Ambassador Charalambos Ioannidis, Thessaloniki Prefecture Black Sea Center President Konstantinos Adamidis and Thessaloniki Mayor representative Theodoros Akritidis.
Annual Report
The SAE 2008 annual report presentation was held by the president of SAE. The second annual report to be presented in Parliament within the framework of the Hellenes Abroad Day is very detailed and together with the actions undertaken by all SAE Regions it also includes proposals for the solution of problems that concern the Greeks abroad. Due to the Euro-elections and the closure of the Parliament, the report will be discussed in the fall during a three-day event that will culminate with the report's presentation in parliament.
Education
Issues concerning the dissemination of the Greek-speaking education abroad and problems faced locally were discussed on the first day of the proceedings in a joint meeting with Special Secretary for Expatriate Education and Cross-Cultural Education (PODE) Stefanos Vlastos, who stressed that he wants SAE's assistance to pinpoint and solve the problems.
The SAE Board also met with Professor Ioannis Kazazis, alternate president of the Thessaloniki-based Center for the Greek Language. They discussed the establishment of closer cooperation to ensure that the Greeks abroad will be fully informed on the benefits stemming from the acquisition of the certificate of attainment in Greek and an agreement was reached to proceed with the signing of a cooperation memorandum.
Youth
The actions undertaken in the first half of 2009 were assessed and new actions were planned in a joint meeting of the SAE Board with the Youth Networks' Coordinators.
The Youth Networks' Coordinators announced that they will undertake an initiative to collect signatures for the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece and host relevant events worldwide. The creation of a single SAE Youth website, the hosting of a World Youth Festival and the registration of young expatriates worldwide are a few of the actions to be undertaken.
The meeting of the Youth Networks' Coordinating Councils will be held in Thessaloniki on December 3-6, while the World Youth Meeting will be held in 2010.
The Network Coordinators met with General Secretary for Youth Lefteris Boulias and discussed a number of initiatives on issues of entrepreneurship and volunteerism to be undertaken jointly, while they also discussed problems faced by the young Greek expatriates in each of the seven regions.
Meeting with the Minister of Macedonia-Thrace
On June 27, the SAE Board met with Macedonia-Thrace Minister Stavros Kalafatis and discussed ways to broaden cooperation aimed at strengthening Thessaloniki's character and role as the SAE seat and the capital of Greeks worldwide.
For the record, the "Ark of Hellenes Abroad" initiative will be launched with the economic assistance of the ministry. They also agreed to promote actions aimed at strengthening the ties between the young expatriates and the young people in Thessaloniki and northern Greece with the organizing of events on environment and culture and undertake initiatives aimed at strengthening the business ties between Greece and the Greeks abroad through business missions within the framework of the cooperation between the ministry and the Hellenic Foreign Trade Board.
Joint meeting with the Permanent Parliamentary Committee on Greeks Abroad
The joint meeting of the SAE Board with the Permanent Parliamentary Committee on Greeks Abroad Board focused on issues concerning the SAE Annual Report on which the MPs expressed satisfaction as well as on the reexamination of the issue of the voting rights of the Greeks abroad.
In the meeting participated, Permanent Parliamentary Committee on Greeks Abroad President Nikolaos Tsiartsionis (ND), 1st Vice President Grigoris Niotis (PASOK), 2nd Vice President Nikolaos Gatzis (KKE) and Secretary Anastasios Kourakis (SYRIZA).
