Vassilis Hatzipanagis will be Greece’s sole candidate in the UEFA vote for the top football player of the last 50 years.
On Thursday, the European federation’s official website had a tribute to “Vassia”, entitled “The Nureyev of football”. The article noted that Hatzipanagis was born in Tashkent of Greek parents and took his first professional steps in Pachtakor. He is considered one of the then Soviet Union’s best footballers and had been advised not to leave for Greece. Hatzipanagis made only one appearance with the Greek national team, because he had played for the USSR’s national youth team.
