Former Greek Foreign Minister Petros Molyviatis expressed his deep concern over the small number of wildfire victims going to local Public Works Ministry regional offices to collect the monies due to them.

In an interview to Eleftheros Tipos newspaper, the head of the Fire Victims Fund Foundation sent out a direct call to all of the summer’s wildfire victims to go to the local offices to mention whether they are confronting problems with the fund collection process or the documents they need to submit.  According to Mr. Molyviatis, the government and the Fund wish to facilitate the interested parties and are making every effort in this direction.

The newspaper article mentions that the causes of the problems are primarily the lack of property titles and violations that had taken place in the past (unlisted and illegal properties), something which disables property owners from providing the proper documentation. Thus far, only 18 applications for financial assistance have been submitted to the Fund while there are over 1000 completely destroyed properties that have been reported.
