Celebrations for the Blessing of the Waters were held yesterday in Australian cities, attended by thousands of Greek-Australians. In Sydney, the Archbishop of Australia, Stylianos, officiated, while in Melbourne, the main ceremony was held at the city's port. Apart from Greek-Australians, the state's political leadership was also present.
The Holy Cross was retrieved in Port Melbourne by 38-year-old Costas Lucas from Noble Park. Dozens of people dived into the water for the cross, as it is summer in Australia. In the Melbourne coastal suburb of Frankston, the cross was retrieved from the sea by 60-year-old Vassilis Balourdos. The ceremony was followed by a Greek "panigiri" at the beach.
