An official invitation by Israeli president, Simon Peres, to the Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, Theodore II, to be head of all Christians in the Holy Land during the New Year reception, is the first public expression of Tel Aviv’s recognition of the Patriarch. For the past two New Years, the former patriarch, Eirineos, was invited to the receptions. Earlier this week, Patriarch Theofilos spoke about his recognition and the role of the Christian Orthodox Patriarchate in an interview with the Church of Greece’s radio station. After describing Israel’s decision as a very positive, but expected, step, he noted that the Patriarchate is the “point of reference of Christians in general and a guarantee not only of safeguarding pilgrims, but also the presence of Christians in the Holy Land.
