Sarantopoulos meets with Cypriot refugees

Dr. Olga Sarantopoulos, Secretary of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) has visited the historic villages of Fikardou and Vavatsinia in Cyprus. In Fikardou, the UNESCO-protected hill village of has won tourism awards for its living museum showing Cypriot village life as it was until just a few decades ago, she was enthusiastically greeted by the members of the community’s local council, led by its president, Sophocles Markidis, as well as the inhabitants. The focus of Sarantopoulos’ visit was a meeting with refugees from the island’s occupied territories and with veterans of the liberation struggles of 1955-59.
Sarantopoulos’ visit continued to Vavatsinia, from which a large section of the population has migrated to the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and Africa. Every year, numerous cultural events are held in honour of the expatriates, who have contributed to the preservation and development of the picturesque village.
