Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, Christodoulos was among the recipients of this year's honorees of the Foundation of the Union of Orthodox Peoples.
The Russian Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, Alexios II, who gave out the awards yesterday during an event at the Cathedral of the Savior in Moscow, wished the ailing Christodoulos to overcome his health tribulations and to personally receive his award during an upcoming meeting between the two church leaders. Among this year's other honorees were the President of Moldova, Vladimir Varonin, Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov and the Orthodox Patriarchal Ecclesiastical Seminar "Archbishop Makarios III". The International Foundation for the Unity of Orthodox Peoples was founded in 1995 and is headed by Patriarch Alexios. Past Honorees included Russian President, Vladimir Putin, the former President of the Hellenic republic, Kostis Stefanopoulos, Cyprus President, Tasos Papadopoulos and many more distinguished individuals of the political scene, organizations and foundations.
