Protest against the shutting down of the Modern Greek Studies Department Australia
Συντάχθηκε απο τον/την Μπάμπης Παπαδάκης
Over 150 students in the University of New South Wales in Sydney held a major protest rally Tuesday sending out a strong message to university officials against the university’s decision to have the Modern Greek Studies Department closed.
According to the decision, the department will be shut down effective next year “due to lack of interest” causing the strong reaction of expatriate students and the university’s Student Union who characterized the decision as “unacceptable” and decided to hold the protest in an effort to overturn it. The students and department heads are maintaining that claim that the decision for the department’s closure is based in the framework of the university’s decision to seek a more financially beneficial strategy to strengthen other foreign language departments (mainly Asian) at the expense of European languages.
