One hundred thousand spectators turn Fifth Avenue into Greece

A crowd of about 100,000 Greek Americans waving Greek flags marched on Sunday, April 26, 2009 at the annual Greek Independence Day parade in Manhattan, under clear skies and record high temperatures.
Greek National Defense Minister Evangelos Meimarakis, Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias and Greek American singer Tony Orlando were the Grand Marshals.
 New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, NY Senator Charles Schumer, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney NYC Comptroller Thompson, NYS Assemblyman Michael Giannaris and NYS Senate minority leader Dean Skelos were among the dignitaries attending the festivities as well as Greek political party MP's.
Over 110 omogeneia organizations and bodies participated in this year's parade whose central theme was "One people, 9000 years of history and culture".
During the parade's procession, Greek-Americans demanded the recognition of the Pontic Genocide, called fro the rights of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the reopening of the Halki Seminary, expressed their non-negotiable stance on the FYROM name issue and called for the securing of the rights of the Greek minority in northern Epirus.
Also filling the hearts of the parade attendees with pride and joy was the presence of the Greek National Guard's Evzones and the national hymns played by the Greek Army's Philharmonic Orchestra.
