Greek-Americans rally to support Simotas
Σύνταξη/επιμέλεια από τον/την Θεόφιλος Δουμάνης

Greek-Americans are rallying to support 31-year-old lawyer Aravella  Simotas, who has been designated as the Democratic candidate for the 36th Assembly District (Astoria) to replace Assembly member Michael Gianaris, who is running for the state Senate seat left open by Onorato’s impending retirement.

Simotas is a highly regarded first-time candidate. A graduate of local schools, the lifelong Astoria resident has been active civically as a member of Community Board 1, the United Community Civic Association (UCCA) and the Hellenic Times Scholarship Fund. She’s been endorsed by the Queens Democratic Party and the Taminent Regular Democratic Club.

Aravella Simotas, a Democrat who is an attorney at the Manhattan firm of Bickel Brewer, appears to be the candidate most seriously considering a run so far.

Simotas and Gianaris are seen as having a close relationship: they are neighbors in Astoria, and as a one-time aide to Council Members Peter Vallone Jr. and Peter Vallone Sr., Simotas has worked closely with Gianaris—especially on a number of environmental issues.
