President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias warned that the negotiations which began with a view to reunify Cyprus will not be easy and pledged to continue working hard in order to reach a solution, based on fundamental principles. Addressing an event organised Friday night in New York by the Cyprus Federation of America and the International Coordinating Committee Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA), President Christofias expressed satisfaction with his meetings on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, noting that "our policy is convincing."
He added that since he assumed office in February 2008 he has been realising the promise he made to Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, that is, to undertake initiatives, break the deadlock and begin a serious dialogue for a Cyprus solution.
If Turkey, he added, does not behave as a modern European state, "it will be cornered."
Present at the event were, among others, Minister of Foreign Affairs Markos Kyprianou, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou, Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou, Cypriot Ambassador in Washington Andreas Kakouris, Permanent Representative of Cyprus at the UN Minas Hadjimichael, head of the Greek Orthodox Church in America Archbishop Demetrios, Greek Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Yiannis Valinakis and Greek Ambassador Alexandros Malias.
Before the event, President Christofias presided over a meeting with the participation of the leaderships of overseas organisations, during which issues concerning enlightenment were also discussed.
Addressing the event, the Cypriot President warned that the negotiations will not be easy, and noted that "at times, the behavior of the Turkish side and sometimes the behavior of the Turkish Cypriot side constitute challenge the feelings of the Cypriot people."
He reaffirmed that the Republic of Cyprus ''will continue to follow with consistency the same principles," adding that "if sometimes challenges are unbearable, we will respond, always based on principles."
Referring to his meetings on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, he expressed satisfaction, saying that ''all welcome our initiatives."
President Christofias expressed Cyprus' gratitude towards the Cypriots and Greeks of the Diaspora, as well as the Greek government for their continuous support for justice in Cyprus.
