Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew referred to the Events of September 6-7, 1955 addressing the faithful in the Panagia Church in Bosporus yesterday.
The tragic events marked the beginning of the uprooting of the Greeks in Istanbul and 1955, 1964 and 1974 were very difficult years for the local Greek community when thousands were forced to leave, the Ecumenical Patriarch stressed, adding that those who stayed still have the courage to keep history, faith and tradition alive. The Ecumenical Patriarch expressed optimism that Turkey sooner or later will become a member of the great European family, pointing out that such a development will bring spectacular changes to the lives of the Greeks, the Church and the rest of the minorities as well as to the overall structure of the Turkish society.
