Andros Kyprianou, envoy of the President of the Cyprus Republic visited the central offices of the Greek Orthodox Community of South Australia on Wednesday July 23rd. Mr. Kyprianou’s arrival is associated with the events currently being held in Adelaide within the framework of the anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. The reception was attended by diplomatic officials of Greece and Cyprus, the vice-president of the Cypriot community of South Australia and representatives of Greek and Cypriot associations. In her brief welcoming address, the vice-president of the community Liza Dimitriou expressed the hope for the reunification of Cypriot people and underlined the significance of Mr. Kyprianou’s diplomatic work in international politics. The recent appointment of Alexander Downer, former Australian foreign minister, as a special representative of the United Nations Secretary General for the Cyprus dispute, offers an opportunity for a renewed interest for the Cyprus issue in Australia.
