The Democrats Abroad organisation has approved the re-founding of the Democrats Abroad Greece (DAGR) as a country committee, according to a relevant press release. Founded in 1964, Democrats Abroad is the official overseas branch of America's Democratic Party, which represents Americans living abroad. The Greek chapter had an active committee from 1986 until 2008.

Prime Minister George Papandreou had an important meeting earlier this week, at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Washington, with a group of 20 prominent Greek American to discuss the current financial crisis in Greece and ways to help the motherland to tackle the situation. Greek American business leaders offered promises for investments, along with advice on how to make investing in Greece more attractive and friendly. Their advice included the need for reforms to cut red tape and corruption and create a business friendly environment with increased productivity.

Washington – More than 400 people gathered on February 4 in Washington D.C. for the opening reception of a historical photographic exhibit about Mount Athos presented by “National Geographic”, titled: “Called to the Holy Mountain: Mount Athos,” according to Dr. Zoe Kosmidou, Minister Counselor of Cultural Affairs for the Embassy of Greece and U.S.A. Representative for the Hellenic Foundation for Culture.

«Δεν πρόκειται να σιωπήσω, ούτε κανείς θα με φιμώσει. Θα συνεχίσω να μιλώ δημοσίως για ζητήματα στα οποία πιστεύω».

Την ρητή αυτή δήλωση έκανε ο πρωθυπουργός της Νότιας Αυστραλίας, Μάικ Ρανν, απαντώντας σε σφοδρή κριτική που δέχθηκε από Σκοπιανούς, για ομιλία που είχε απευθύνει στο Φεστιβάλ των «Δημητρίων» στην Αδελαΐδα.

Το θέμα απασχολεί σήμερα την μόνη αγγλόφωνη εφημερίδα της πόλης The Advertiser, η οποία σημειώνει ότι ο κ. Ρανν στην ομιλία του είχε αναφερθεί στον κ. Gjorge Ivanov, τον οποίο χαρακτήρισε ως ως ‘υποκινητή προβλημάτων με τον πλέον επικίνδυνο τρόπο’ και κατηγόρησε την πΓΔΜ (στο κείμενο ‘Μακεδονία’) ότι κλέβει τον ελληνικό πολιτισμό.

Ο κ. Rann, σύμφωνα με την εφημερίδα, αναθέρμανε την υπόσχεσή του στους ελληνικής καταγωγής ψηφοφόρους του ότι θα «συνεχίσει με συνέπεια και χωρίς περιστροφές να υποστηρίζει το σκόπο τους. Είναι σημαντικό γιατί κανείς δεν δικαιούται να κλέβει την ιστορία και τον πολιτισμό ενός άλλου έθνους».

Η ομιλία προκάλεσε την παρέμβαση του Metodija Koloski, προέδρου της αυτοαποκαλούμενης «Ενωμένης ‘Μακεδονικής’ Διασποράς» (sic) (που εδρεύει στην Ουάσιγκτον), ο οποίος συναντήθηκε στην Αδελαϊδα με τον Υπουργό Πολυπολιτισμικών Υποθέσεων Michael Atkinson και επέδωσε επιστολή διαμαρτυρίας με αποδέκτη τον κ. Rann.

Ο κ. Koloski δήλωσε στην εφημερίδα ότι ο λαός του ‘συκοφαντήθηκε’ και απαίτησε άνευ όρων συγνώμη. Ο κ. Ρανν απάντησε πως δεν σιωπά και δεν φιμώνεται από κανέναν.
