Census day for Hellenes in the US

April 1 will be census day for Americans, as well as for Greek-Americans living in the United States. According to an announcement issued by the Greek Embassy in Washington, within the contest of the census which is held every 10 years, the Census Bureau will send a questionnaire to every American household in the next few days.

Nelson Mandela’s Greek lawyer honoured in Australia

In his speech, Bizos referred to the history of his migration for legal studies, his acquaintance with Nelson Mandela, the struggles for human rights in South Africa and the abolition of Apartheid.
SAE Oceania Games to be held in Darwin

The Australian Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, Paul Henderson, expressed the full support of the government for a decision by SAE Region Oceania to organize the 2011 Panhellenic Cultural and Sports Games in Darwin. Henderson had a meeting in the NT capital city with SAE Coordinator, George Angelopoulos and members of the Executive Committee of the institution at which the organisation of the games was discussed.

Γενική Συνέλευση της Χιακής Ομοσπονδίας

Την πρώτη της γενική συνέλευση για τη νέα χρονιά έκανε την Πέμπτη 28 Ιανουαρίου η Χιακή Ομοσπονδία, παρουσία πολλών αντιπροσώπων σωματείων μελών. Χαιρετίζοντας τους αντιπροσώπους ο νέος πρόεδρος Βαγγέλης Καβάδας εξέφρασε ικανοποίηση για την αναζωογόνηση αρκετών σωματείων μελών, όπως αυτό φάνηκε από τη συμμετοχή σε εκδηλώσεις για την κοπή της βασιλόπιτας.

Η συνέλευση εξέλεξε πενταμελή επιτροπή με πρόεδρο το Γιώργο Αλμυρούδη για να εισηγηθεί τους υποψήφιους για το Ομήρειο Βραβείο και να αναλάβει τη διοργάνωση της εκδήλωσης.

Επίσης αποφασίστηκε να τεθεί υπό την αιγίδα της Χιακής Ομοσπονδίας το Γηριατριακό Ιδρυμα, που ιδρύθηκε το 2000, με στόχο την ενίσχυση ευαγών ιδρυμάτων στην Αμερική, αλλά και την αγορά οικοπέδου στο οποίο να ανοικοδομηθεί Οίκος Ευγηρίας για τους Χιώτες της Αμερικής, Σήμερα το ταμείο διαθέτει 67.000 δολάρια και με την ένταξή του στην Ομοσπονδία αναμένεται να αναζωπυρωθεί το ενδιαφέρον της Ομογένειας. Η Χιακή Ομοσπονδία προτίθεται να διοργανωθεί έρανος, με στόχο τη συγκέντρωση ποσού 400.000 δολαρίων. Στην εκδήλωση κόπηκε και η παραδοσιακή βασιλόπιτα.
