Sunday's impressive parade held in Melbourne for the March 25th national holiday was one of the largest in the past few years. Home to thousands of expatriate Greeks, Melbourne dressed in the blue-and-white colours of the Greek flag and Greek-Australians gathered at the city's stately War Memorial to honour their ancestors, who sacrificed their lives to release Greece from the Turkish yoke.
In his speech, the State Premier of Victoria, John Brumby, thanked Greek-Australians for their significant donations for the state's wildfire victims, as well as for their general contribution to Victoria as a whole. Greece was represented by Merchant Marine undersecretary Panos Kammenos, who referred to the role of Diaspora Hellenes in the 1821 uprising.
