    The Democrats Abroad organisation has approved the re-founding of the Democrats Abroad Greece (DAGR) as a country committee, according to a relevant press release.     Founded in 1964, Democrats Abroad is the official overseas branch of America's Democratic Party, which represents Americans living abroad. The Greek chapter had an active committee from 1986 until 2008.

    Shocking testimonies of people who lived through the horror of torture, executions and death squads. Stories from prisons, torments and torturers throwing prisoners alive out of airplanes are presented in the documentary “The List of Silence”, directed by Nikos Vezyrgiannis and based on Pavlos Nerantzis’s research and screenplay. After long research, the world premiere of the documentary - based on an issue, which still is an “open wound” for the world - will be presented at the Documentary Festival of Thessaloniki.

    Prime Minister George Papandreou had an important meeting earlier this week, at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Washington, with a group of 20 prominent Greek American to discuss the current financial crisis in Greece and ways to help the motherland to tackle the situation. Greek American business leaders offered promises for investments, along with advice on how to make investing in Greece more attractive and friendly. Their advice included the need for reforms to cut red tape and corruption and create a business friendly environment with increased productivity.

    Montreal – Two university events are being organised within the next few weeks in Montreal. The first is organised by the Modern Greek Studies Centre of Montreal University and involves the presentation of a book by Jean Antoine Caravolas, entitled: “Jules David and Hellenic Studies 1783-1854”.

    Washington – More than 400 people gathered on February 4 in Washington D.C. for the opening reception of a historical photographic exhibit about Mount Athos presented by “National Geographic”, titled: “Called to the Holy Mountain: Mount Athos,” according to Dr. Zoe Kosmidou, Minister Counselor of Cultural Affairs for the Embassy of Greece and U.S.A. Representative for the Hellenic Foundation for Culture.

The first general assembly of the New Year was held by the Chian Federation on January 28th in the presence of many representatives from its many member associations.

 

The assembly elected a five member committee headed by George Almiroudis as president to announce the candidates for this year’s Homeric Award and will assume the events organization.

 

It was also decided to place under the aegis of the Chian Federation, the Geriatric Foundation, founded in 2000, aimed at supporting other non-profit organizations and for the purchase of property to build and old age home for the Chians of the United States.
